Commonalities Among Archives and Records

John H. Slate, co-author of Managing Local Government Archives (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016), has observed or worked alongside records management programs from the perspective of archives for over 30 years. Slate will discuss commonalities among archives and records and various structures and strategies for co-existence.

Speaker:  John H. Slate

John H. Slate is city archivist for the City of Dallas, where he has been responsible for historic city government records in the Dallas Municipal Archives since 2000. He is a Fellow of the Society of American Archivists and a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists. He possesses a BS from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, specializing in archival enterprise, from the same institution.

John’s work in archives, libraries, and special collections began at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin, where he spent thirteen years; he’s also worked in the public libraries of San Antonio and Grand Prairie. He served as president of the Society of Southwest Archivists 2010-11. In addition he served ten years on the Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s Historical Records Advisory Board.

He’s written numerous articles on archives, photography, music, and Texas history and is the author or co-author of four Arcadia Images of America series books: Historic Dallas Parks, Lost Austin, Dealey Plaza, and John F. Kennedy Sites in Dallas-Fort Worth. He is co-author with Kaye Lanning Minchew of the ARMA award-winning Managing Local Government Archives (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016).
